Windows 10 End of Support: What Home Users Should Do

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Here is how to check your PC, protect your files, and choose the safest next step.

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 version 22H2 on October 14, 2025. After support ends, a computer no longer receives regular security updates, bug fixes, or technical support from Microsoft.

Why This Matters at Home

An unsupported computer can become harder to secure and may eventually have trouble with newer apps, browsers, printers, and accessories. That does not mean you need to replace it immediately, but it does mean you should make an informed plan.

Step 1: Check Your PC

Look at your computer's model, processor, memory, storage, and TPM 2.0 support. Windows 11 requires compatible hardware, and older computers may not meet those requirements.

You can check by opening Settings → System → About and then running Microsoft's PC Health Check tool. If the results are confusing, a technician can help you interpret them.

Step 2: Choose the Right Option

Upgrade to Windows 11

If your PC is eligible, Windows 11 is usually the simplest long-term option. Back up your files first, install pending updates, and make sure your important apps and devices are ready.

Use Extended Security Updates Temporarily

Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for some Windows 10 computers. This can provide extra time to plan, but it is not a permanent replacement for supported hardware.

Replace an Older Computer

If your computer is too old for Windows 11, replacement may be more practical than repeated repairs. A new computer can also improve speed, battery life, storage, and compatibility with current software.

Protect Your Files Before You Change Anything

Back up photos, documents, browser data, and other important files before an upgrade or replacement. Keep a second copy on an external drive or in a trusted cloud service, and make sure you can open a few files from that copy.
